Baked Potato Recipe
Baked Potato Ingredients:
- Potatoes – Traditionally baked potatoes are made with Russet potatoes, but you can technically make them with any kind.
- Oil – I love the flavor of olive oil when making a baked potato.
- Salt – Any salt will work, but I’m partial to a good finely ground kosher salt.
How do you bake a potato in the oven? (Step-by-step)
⭐ First, wash potatoes in cold water and remove any sprouts. Pierce each potato with a fork.
⭐ Then, pat dry and rub lightly with olive oil.
⭐ Next, place on a baking sheet and sprinkle all sides with salt.
⭐ Finally, bake until insides are soft and outsides are browned and crispy.
Preparation
What temperature should a baked potato be cooked at?
I like to cook mine at 425F- this is the perfect temperature to get a soft and creamy inside with crispy skin. If you have a convection setting, that will make the skin even crispier, but turn it down to 400 so they don’t burn!
How do you know when a baked potato is done?
When you can easily slide a fork or toothpick into the potato, you know it’s done.
Should I wrap my potatoes in foil before baking?
No, this will steam the potato and won’t give you the yummy crispy skin.
Why do I need to poke holes in the potato before baking?
This allows steam to escape and prevents the potato from bursting during cooking.
What to eat with baked potato? (Serving suggestions)
I like to eat mine absolutely swimming in good butter. Or sometimes topped with chili. And also cheese sauce is good. Oh, oh! And beefy stroganoff dip. Oh, heck. I just really like potatoes.

How to Make a Baked Potato
Ingredients
- Russet potatoes
- Olive oil
- Salt
Instructions
- Wash potatoes in cold water and remove any sprouts. Pierce each potato about 8 times. I like to use the tip of a sharp knife rather than a fork.
- Pat dry with a clean towel or cloth and rub lightly with olive oil.
- Place on a lined baking sheet and sprinkle all sides with salt.
- Bake at 425 for 30 minutes, then turn and bake an additional 25 - 40 minutes (depending on how many potatoes you have/their size). A medium potato will take about an hour.
- When a toothpick, knife, or fork slides easily into the center of the potato, it is done.
