This Simple Pizza Dough Recipe was one of the first posts I ever published on Mama Loves Food in 2008 and it remains steadfast in our recipe rotation. Granted, now I’m making several more batches at a time because our family has nearly doubled in size (!!!) but that’s no bother because this dough freezes beautifully, so there’s never an excuse to not have homemade pizza. Okay, that’s a lie. So many excuses. But at least this really simple recipe makes it easier when you want to have homemade pizza (or calzones, or bread sticks, or stromboli, or pizza braids!).
I wish I knew who to credit this recipe to, but it’s been penciled in the back of my food binder for as long as I can remember. I’ve tweaked it here and there a few times, but I definitely am not the true source on this one. Years ago, before kids (yes, there was a time), we would have make-your-own pizza night with friends and I’m thinking maybe I adapted it from them. But honestly. No idea, really.
Now we have make-your-own pizza night with our kiddos and I love this recipe because it’s the perfect amount for two large thin crust pizzas or 4 personal sized thin crust pizzas (or if you like thick crust, 1 large and 2 personals). My kids are usually chaos in the kitchen, but they get so into pizza night that it’s actually really zen. Making the perfect pie takes serious concentration!
Simple Pizza Dough Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water//110-115 degrees (let’s be real, I just run the tap until it’s warm and then call it good)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
Simple Pizza Dough Directions:
- Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Allow to proof (get frothy) for 15 minutes, then add olive oil, 2 cups flour and salt.
- Add remaining flour until dough is rubbery and slightly tacky, but not firm. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface (or in your stand mixer with a dough hook) for approximately five minutes.
- Form dough into a ball and place in greased bowl (turn once to grease top and bottom). Cover and set in a warm place for one hour (I put dough in my oven with the light on).
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- Roll dough into preferred shape on baking sheet or stone and brush with olive oil. Stab several times with a fork (go ahead, take out your frustrations!). Bake 5-7 minutes.
- If you want to freeze your crust, allow it to cool and then do so now!
- Top as desired and bake an additional 15-20 minutes (or until crust is lightly browned). If you prefer a crispier crust, you can remove it from the baking sheet and do this part directly on the oven rack.
