Cut the top off of your artichokes, and trim tips of the remaining leaves with scissors. (Careful, they're sharp!). Also, cut off the stem so your artichoke sits flat.
Place artichoke(s) in a lidded microwave safe container and drizzle generously with butter (or oil) and lemon juice, making sure to get liquid all the way down to the base of the leaves.
Fill container with about one inch of water (err on the side of too much, if you run dry it will scorch the bottom of your artichoke) and sprinkle liberally with salt (I'm partial to freshly ground sea salt).
Microwave covered on high for ten minutes (or 12-14 for two artichokes).
