I was feeling a little funky on this very busy day and decided to try my hand at some colorful sugar cookies. They were a big hit with the kids!
Colorful Sugar Cookie
Ingredients
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 stick 1/2 cup softened (very softened) butter
- 1 egg
- 1 & 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Combine flour baking powder and salt, mixing well.
- Combine sugar and butter in a large bowl and mix well (you can use an electric mixer if you wish). Add egg and vanilla. Mix well.
- Add flour mixture. Mix well.
- Divide dough into four equal parts (or however many colors you want). Add several drops of food coloring to each divided section. Knead until color is throughout. (this will initially dye your hands, but as you knead, the coloring will go back to the dough - wear gloves or use an electric mixer if this stresses you out).
- Shape each color into a log and then combine colors to make one large log. Wrap log in saran wrap (to keep from sticking to counter) and roll together (like a snake) until it is the desired cookie cutting diameter (keep in mind, cookies will grow in the oven!).***
- Chill in refrigerator for two hours, or until dough is firm.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Slice cookie log (1/4" - 1/2" slices)**** and place slices on lightly greased cookie sheet.
- Bake 10-15 minutes (I sliced mine 1/2"; they took 14 minutes and came out perfectly soft and chewy. Mmmmm.)
- 10. Cool completely (ha!).

WARNING: This is not a super sweet sugar cookie. Super yummy? YES. Super sweet? NO. It’s the perfect coffee dunking cookie, in my opinion!
Recipe inspired by the Publix sugar cookie recipe located on the back of the Publix sugar bags.
If you slice 1/4″ thick, recipe yields about 4 dozen cookies; 1/2″ yields 2 dozen.

I saved this page as a bookmark and have literally not been able to close the tab for the past two weeks! My husband loves the publix sugar cookie recipe and although that used to be his favorite, this adaptation has made him forget there was ever a recipe on the back of the bag to begin with. I've made them three times this week and he has even made them himself a few times last week as well!

Thanks, Melissa! I'm so glad you and your husband like the recipe 🙂

I do the rainbow/tie dye cupcakes and they're always a HUGE hit!
I can't wait to make these for my kids!

I just love these!! Totally won't buy the Publix ones anymore which I used to love!!! My five year old daughter loves to help me make them and we make homemade buttercream with orange juice and maple syrup to go on top!!!

If I don’t have wheat flour in the house can I use all white flour instead?
April Woods says
yes, that will work 🙂
