You might think I’m a little nutty with some of this advice, but trust me. These five things will make getting up in the morning so much easier!
Confession: I am not a morning person. Not at all, not even a little bit. The only time I like mornings is when we’re on vacation and I am able to wake up naturally to zero responsibilities. Which is absolutely never because I have five kids and about a zillion things to do all the time.
In the absence of a dream vacation though, there are definitely ways to easy the pain of that too early wake up call. Some of which I employ and others that I’m writing here to encourage myself to get into better habits. Because P.S. I’m just really not good at mornings.

1. Go to Bed Early
I know, it seems like an obvious thing, but it’s the one I struggle with most. The evenings are my ME time, where the whole house is quiet and I’m able to fully engage with whatever I’m doing. Whether that’s writing an article, developing a recipe, or just melting into the couch with my latest Netflix bae.
The problem lies in the fact that I will look over at the clock and suddenly it’s 2 or 3 in the morning. And morning continues to come at the same time every day. I’ve found though, that when I set a reminder to go to bed at midnight or eleven, I’m such a better person in the morning. I’m more productive, I’m kinder, and I’m not hating mornings quite so much.
2. Have a Routine.
Things always seem to go smoother when there’s a set routine. It’s like a well choreographed ballet to get the kids going and out the door in the morning. Get up, watch a little television, eat breakfast, brush your teeth, change your clothes, grab your gear and shoes, and off we are.
While we don’t think about it often, the same applies for adults. Sit down and think about the most efficient way to go through your morning. Maybe you could grab your coffee after you’re fully dressed so you’re not taking a trip into the kitchen in the midst of getting ready. Or move the coffee maker to the bedroom even!
Heaven knows if I wander into the kitchen while I’m trying to get out the door, I’ll be sidelined by chores and children for a solid thirty minutes!
3. Prep Everything.
Take all the choices out of the morning routine. Make it so a zombie could follow your morning journey and come out looking fabulous. Because, let’s be real. That’s exactly what I am in the morning. A total zombie.
Lay your clothes and shoes out. Put your earrings and makeup and contacts where you don’t have to fumble for them. Have the kids backpacks hung near the garage door. Remember that game Mousetrap from when we were kids, where you just send the marble into the shoot and everything happens automatically? Be the marble, folks. Be the marble.
4. Don’t Get on Social Media.
I know, a little counter intuitive for someone who makes a living on social media. But seriously. There is no bigger time suck than the internet. Wait until you’re all ready to go and enjoying breakfast before you break out the smart phone. The world will not stop turning if you don’t see what cousin Jane posted between the hours of 9p and 6a. I promise.
Let checking your email and Twitter be the reward for having your ducks in a row when you’re ready to be out the door a full ten minutes early because you’ve got this morning thing by the horns!
5. Don’t Cook Breakfast.
Also a weird thing for a food blogger to say. I know. And I’m not at all saying don’t EAT breakfast. Just don’t cook it in the morning! Do meal prep on Sundays, have cereal at the ready, and stock up on easy microwavable breakfasts.
We’re loving these new Jimmy Dean 9 oz bowls that I found at Target! We’ve been Jimmy Dean fans for a long time, but these new breakfast bowls are especially great because they have better flavor, enhanced premium ingredients, and a whopping 21-23 grams of protein depending on which variety you choose!
Barring being a morning person (what even IS that?), there’s no good reason you should be a short order cook in the morning. There’s just not with all the great and healthy breakfast options these days!
