How to Make a Simple Magnetic Fridge FrameHave I ever told you I originally went to college for an art degree?  But then I failed Art History three times (pro tip: if you stop going to class, you will not be able to pass the exams).  At that point, I figured third time’s the charm and changed my major.  Somehow I ended up a lawyer.  I don’t even know.

I still enjoy getting artsy here and there, but history has shown if a project takes more than a few days, it probably won’t ever get finished.  Those of you following my Facebook or Instagram feed, already know this.  So, nowadays I look for things I can do in small bites, or just a couple sittings.  This Simple Magnetic Fridge Frame fit the bill perfectly.

I did this over a couple hours while binge watching Wayward Pines on Hulu.  Do you watch that show?  I can’t decide how I feel about it.  Anyway, depending on how fancy you want to get, this project can be done in as little as five minutes.  I used some leftover oops paint and paint pens for mine, but you could use washi tape, or stickers, or even just stick with a plain frame!  The possibilities are endless!

Ingredients

  • Picture frame Just the frame, not the glass or backing.  You can find these in abundance at garage sales and thrift shops.  Or the bottom of my guest closet.
  • Scotch® Permanent Mounting Squares
  • Strong magnets don't use the strip kind, check in the hardware section or online
  • Decorative items i.e. paint, glitter, stickers, etc.

Instructions

  • If you're using paint or something messy, tape newspaper or scrap paper over your work area.
  • Remove any nails or staples that are sticking out (I was able to just bend mine out of the way).
  • Decorate your frame! I used some leftover oops paint and oil based paint pens.  Allow it to dry completely (I hung mine on a tack out of the kids's reach).
  • Clean the back of your frame according to the Scotch® Permanent Mounting Squares directions, and place the mounting squares evenly around the edges.  Stick magnets to mounting squares and allow to set by pressing down for 30 seconds.
  • Place on your fridge with a favorite picture or weekly menu plan (scroll down to save and print a free copy of mine)!
  • Enjoy!

To protect my coffee table I used some scrap paper (okay, it was my 2 year old’s art work, don’t tell him!) held down with Scotch® Magic™ Tape.  For adhering the magnets, I picked up Scotch® Permanent Mounting Squares from Walmart.  I love that there was a Scotch® adhesive product for everything I needed in this project.

I figure with the way my kids slam the fridge door several dozen times a day, I wanted something that was not going to give out on me.  Four squares hold up to 1 pound, so I figured with six squares the frame was definitely toddler-proof.  At my store, I found them in the hardware section, but Scotch® and Command™ brands are also available in the crafting aisle.
