We take a lot of road trips. With five kids who still ride in car seats, trains and planes aren’t on our radar yet. I’ve shared some of my travel secrets before, but this one might be my kids’ favorite. We keep these “Are We There Yet?!” Emergency Snack Packs for when we’re deep into the trip and the kids need to hang on just a few hours more.
My kids also refer to these as The Junk Bags or Stuff We Never Get to Eat at Home bags and they’re generally coupled with a surprise new movie.
Our next planned trip is Illinois and Michigan in the fall to see the change in leaves and enjoy some cool weather. It’s not the longest trip we’ve done, but close. And if I have my way, we’ll sneak north into Canada for a bit, in which case it actually will be our farthest jaunt.
What I love about road trips is getting to see the landscape of our country as we travel through. While a plane would be convenient, it’s less of an experience. Our most recent trip took us through Tallahassee, FL, New Orleans, LA (during Mardi Gras, oops!), Oklahoma City, OK, Little Rock, AR, Jackson, MS, Pensacola, FL, and Gainesville, FL!
"Are We There Yet?!" Road Trip Emergency Packs!
Ingredients
- small tupperware
- your kids most coveted treats and snacks I find bite size items work best as it takes them longer to get through
- a small map of your trip
- optional: a new movie for the tablet/DVD player
Instructions
- Stick a small handful of each treat into the tupperware and top with the map. If your kids are anything like mine, you'll want to make sure that each pack is identical. Hide well (but not so well that you can't find them when you need them).
- Wait until you're about two hours out from your destination and the kids are starting to climb the walls. If you can avoid letting on that you have the bags, it works better. Otherwise they'll just wear you down. Even though we do these every time, we always tell the kids we decided against it *this* time. My oldest is always skeptical, but so far it works.
- Pull them out when you desperately need some quiet.

We grabbed all our road trip pack items from Albertson’s where they’re hosting The Best Road Trip Ever campaign. It was easy to find the perfect snacks because they were labeled right on the shelf! There were tons of choices, but we went with Skittles, Peanut M&Ms, Twizzler Bites, Starburst, Oreos Thins, and Dove Chocolate Covered Cranberries. If that won’t keep the kids happy for a bit, I just don’t know what will!
