A Mango Smoothie is the perfect post workout protein boost!

A Mango Smoothie makes exercise worthwhile. Let’s be real.  I don’t like working out or going to the gym.  It’s *totes* torture.  I am always glad when I do go, and am also super excited our local Y just got all new equipment (yay for virtual running scenes!), but that doesn’t mean I love sweating it out.

Nope, sure don’t.  This is in stark contrast to my husband who considers his afternoon gym trip the highlight of his day.  Who is this man I married?!

But if I must go (and yes, I must), then at least I can add a little silver lining of my own by enjoying a delicious (and healthy!) tropical smoothie after working out.  This Mango Smoothie recipe may only be three ingredients, but it’s thick and smooth and sweetly satisfying.  Also: yum.

Vanilla Mango Smoothie Ingredients

Ripe Mango – A ripe mango will smell sweet, give a little to the touch, and be heavy for its weight. You can’t necessarily tell by color, as mangos come in a variety of colors! However, once you know the variety you prefer, you’ll get a sense of when the color is just right as well.

Vanilla Protein Powder – There are many varieties, and you can use a plant based protein to keep it vegetarian/vegan if you’d like.

Orange Juice – I live in Florida, so fresh squeezed is my jam, so to speak. However, you can totally buy your OJ at the market.

How Do You Cut A Mango

How to cut a mango is always the first question!! A couple years ago I watched an online video about how to cut a mango.  Turns out it’s really easy.

Slice along either side of the seed pod, score the inside, flip it inside out, then cut off the cubes!  After a couple tries you’ll be an old pro. And it’s a super fun party trick.

When you’re done cubing the mango, toss it into your blender for a moment until it’s a smooth puree. Mmmmmm.

How Can You Tell If A Mango Is Ripe

To tell if a mango is ripe, first go by smell. Scent is a part of our taste sensation, so a mango should smell like you want it to taste!

Like many fruits (think peaches), a mango is ripe when it gives a little to the touch but is not mushy. It should also feel heavy for its size, as it is hopefully full of juice.

There are many types of mango – almost 1500 different varietals! However, grocery stores in the United States do not carry many types. The most common is the Tommy Atkins, which is not considered the best by most Mango lovers. The Ataulfo is sweeter and less fibrous.

Finally, many of our US mangoes are grown in Mexico, Central America, or South America. If you have a Latin American market nearby, you might find more varieties and a better price.  If you can find mangoes from India, they may be sweeter and less fibrous.

How Do You Ripen A Mango

To ripen a mango, leave it on the counter for a few days. If you need it more quickly than that, put it in a paper bag with an apple.

Once the mango is ripe, place it in the refrigerator.

When Are Mangoes In Season

Mango season varies, as the US market gets mangoes from different countries, which have different seasons! The season peaks in late spring to summer, and you will see the types of mangoes change as the summer progresses and the buyers purchase from different countries.

As the spring and summer rolls on, try a variety of mango types. You may discover a new favorite.

What Are The Benefits Of Mango

Mangoes, like most fruits and vegetables, have many benefits. Plants have been found to help with slowing down age-related degeneration as the fruits and vegetables provide important phytonutrients.

Mango contains zeaxanthin, a free radical scavenger which supports eye health, and may be protective for macular degeneration. Mangoes also contain beta-carotine, which may help with asthma prevention.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been shown to support healthy body weight and may help stave off obesity and diabetes. The fiber found in plant products supports a healthy gut, and the vitamins and nutrients help support a healthy cardiovascular system.

Is Mango Good For The Digestive System

Mangoes are good for the digestive system as they contain fiber as well as vitamins and minerals.

What Do Protein Powders Do

Protein powders provide protein to the body. Protein acts to build and repair tissue, which is why it is often consumed after a workout.

What Is Protein Powder Made Of

Protein powders come in a variety of forms. Usually the first decision one makes is whether to get a plant based or an animal based protein.

The most commonly used protein is whey protein, which is derived from dairy. Those with dairy allergies should probably avoid whey, although it is a different protein than casein. There are alternate animal based proteins as well.

Common plant proteins are hemp, pea, and rice. Check for extra ingredients that may be in the protein (like sweeteners) and buy a reputable brand from a good source.

End grain cutting board – This is my absolute favorite cutting board and the one that I get the most compliments on.  And p.s. I have a lot of cutting boards.  It really is absolutely stunning, and knows how to take a beating.  We use it every single day!

Ninja blender – We. Love. This. Blender. It blends all the things!  Beautifully!  No scraping the sides like I did in my old blender.  And for a super reasonable price.  My favorite thing to blend is Strawberry Lime Slushes!
