Preparation
Can I make chocolate toffee bars ahead of time?
Yes, these can be made a day or two in advance. Make the bars and store at room temperature until ready to serve.
What kind of chocolate to use for chocolate toffee bars?
We used semisweet chocolate chips but you can use milk chocolate if you like a richer dessert or even white chocolate if desired.
What kind of toffee should you use?
If you have a great homemade toffee recipe, go ahead and use homemade toffee bits! Otherwise, there are lots of premade store bought options that are typically found in the baking aisle of the grocery store.
Storage and leftovers
How long do chocolate toffee bars last?
Store these at room temperature for 3-5 days. Make sure to seal in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
Can you freeze chocolate toffee bars?
Yes, store in an airtight freezer safe container in the freezer for up to 3 months. If freezing after they’ve been cut into bars, layer between pieces of wax or parchment paper to prevent the bars from sticking together.
Tips and tricks
✅ Try adding nuts like chopped peanuts or pecans for added texture and flavor!
✅ Share these on your holiday treat tray or wrap them up as a gift.
✅ Sprinkle with some coarse sea salt for an added salty sweet twist.
✅ Change up the chocolate to milk chocolate, dark chocolate or white chocolate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make these bars gluten-free?
Yes, you can try using gluten-free flour to make the crust. Ensure that other ingredients, like toffee bits and chocolate chips, are also gluten-free.
What can I substitute for toffee bits?
If toffee bits are unavailable, you can chop up toffee candy bars into small pieces or use caramel bits as a tasty alternative.
Can I add extra layers to these bars for more variety?
Absolutely! Consider adding layers like a nutty layer with chopped peanuts or pecans between the crust and filling for added crunch and flavor. Or some shredded coconut for a bit of chew.
Can I use a different size baking pan if I don’t have an 8×8 inch pan?
Yes, you can use a similar-sized pan, but keep in mind that it may affect the baking time. Adjust the baking time accordingly and keep an eye on the bars for doneness.
