Fruit and Granola Trail MixWe are nature people.  If we don’t get out for at least a short hike every week, we all start to go a little stir crazy.  I’m not sure what it is about tromping about in the woods that melts my stress away, but it just works.  Even with five little hobgoblins following along.

What I have learned though, is that there’s nothing worse than getting 2 miles into the trail and hearing a chorus of, “we’re soooooo hungry, Mom!” “We’re STARRRRVING!”  That zaps the zen right out of my day.

Fruit and Granola Trail Mix

So, we’ve perfected the art of snack packing, and my favorite hiking snack by far is a good old fashioned trail mix.  A little sweet, a little salty, a little savory, a little something for everyone.  You just can’t go wrong.

For this Fruit and Granola Trail Mix, I grabbed the kiddos and hit Walmart. (Yes, I really took all five grocery shopping).

My kids are cereal junkies, so I let them pick two Quaker® cereals, and then I rounded things out with dried fruit, nuts, and just a smidgen of chocolate.  We mixed it all up when we got home, and did just a wee bit of sampling before hitting the trails.

And hey, if you’re only into the outdoors to the extent that you’ll drink coffee on the patio, no sweat! This trail mix is awesome mixed with yogurt or as an ice cream topping!
