Why you’ll love this homemade steak seasoning recipe!
📌 Cost saving! It’s much more cost effective to make a big batch with the individual ingredients than buying commercially prepared blends.
📌 Easy to adjust for personal tastes. Add more or less of what you love and fine tune to perfection.
📌 Bolder flavor. Make it with the freshest spices so you know it will keep and taste great for a long time.
Steak Seasoning Ingredients
- Salt – Use your favorite salt for this recipe. We used sea salt in the pictured version but you could also use a smoked salt for added flavor.
- Black pepper – I love fresh cracked black pepper. If you want a milder pepper flavor, swap half the black pepper for white pepper.
- Garlic – Granulated garlic. Do not use garlic salt or your seasoning blend will end up much too salty.
- Paprika – Not only does this give great flavor but it also adds to the gorgeous color of this seasoning. Try mixing it up by using a spicy paprika or a smoked paprika.
- Thyme – Thyme is an earthy herb with a slightly minty and lemony flavor. Adjust this to your tastes or swap for dried parsley or rosemary.

- Gluten free.
- Know exactly what’s in them.

- Smoke: Give it a hint of smoke by using smoked paprika or smoked salt.
- Herbs: Swap or add other complimentary herbs like dried rosemary or dried parsley.
- Umami: Add onion powder or dried mushroom powder.

Preparation
Can you make spice blends ahead of time?
Absolutely! We typically make a large jar and use it over the course of several months.
How much homemade steak seasoning should I use?
This recipe is a 1:1 with store bought steak seasoning or rub, so use it exactly as you would when using a commercially prepared blend. I personally tend to be very liberal with it when grilling steaks.
How do you store homemade seasonings?
Spice blends should be stored in an airtight container in a cool dry environment (like an air conditioned house).
Do not store them in the refrigerator as they will condensate when you bring them out and it can cause clumping.
How long does DIY seasoning last?
Dried spice blends theoretically last forever, but will begin to lose flavor potency after about 6 months.
Check your spice labels and make sure not to use out-of-date spices.
