Preparation
Can graham cracker toffee be made ahead?
Yes, this recipe can be made a day or two in advance. Once cooled and broken apart, store in an airtight container at room temperature until ready to serve.
What kind of topping should go on graham cracker toffee?
We used chopped pecans for this recipe but there are a variety of options. You could try chopped pretzels, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, or even sprinkles.
What kind of chocolate chips to use for graham cracker toffee?
You can use semi-sweet or milk chocolate but make sure it is a good quality chocolate chip brand. You need the chocolate chips to melt easily when placed back in the oven, choose a brand that you know and trust for good melting.
Storage and leftovers
How long does graham cracker toffee last?
My guess is, there won’t be any leftovers, but if there are, store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Can I freeze graham cracker toffee?
Yes, make sure they are cooled completely and broken into pieces. Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. We recommend storing between layers of wax or parchment paper.
How do I cut graham cracker toffee?
If you want the squares to be uniform, use a very sharp knife to cut the toffee between the squares. If you don’t mind a rougher broken up look, simply break the toffee apart using your hands.
Tips and tricks
✅ Sprinkle with some coarse sea salt for an added salty sweet twist.
✅ Change up the chocolate to milk chocolate, dark chocolate or white chocolate.
✅ Use chopped pretzels, chopped peanuts or chopped almonds instead of pecans.
✅ Share these on your holiday treat tray or wrap them up as a gift.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a different type of cracker for this recipe?
While graham crackers are our favorite, you can experiment with other types of crackers like Ritz, club crackers, or saltines. Keep in mind that the texture and taste may vary.
Can I use salted butter instead of unsalted butter?
Yes, you can use salted butter, but be mindful of the overall saltiness in the recipe. Adjust the quantity of added salt or skip it altogether if using salted butter.
Why is my toffee still sticky?
If the toffee is too sticky, it may not have reached the proper temperature during the boiling stage. Ensure that the butter and brown sugar mixture reaches a bubbly, melted consistency before pouring it over the graham crackers. If needed, consider adjusting the cooking time slightly.
Can I make this recipe without nuts?
Absolutely, feel free to omit the nuts if you have allergies or simply prefer the toffee without them. The recipe will still be delicious.
How do I prevent the chocolate from seizing when melting it?
To avoid chocolate seizing, melt it slowly using low heat and stir continuously. Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate using a double boiler or in short intervals in the microwave, stirring each time.
Can I use this toffee as a base for other desserts?
Definitely! Crushed graham cracker toffee can make a delightful crust for pies or cheesecakes. Experiment with using it as a topping for ice cream or incorporating it into other dessert recipes for added flavor and texture.
What to enjoy with graham cracker toffee (serving suggestions)
Graham cracker toffee is one of my favorite holiday dessert recipes because it’s so easy to make and even more delicious to eat. We like to make these with Christmas sugar cookie bars, Italian Christmas cookies, and peppermint truffles.
