Red Wine Vinaigrette Ingredients
- Oil – I am partial to olive oil. I think a robust olive oil is delicious in this recipe, but you can absolutely use a mild oil as well.
- Red wine vinegar – The star of the show! Choose a quality red wine vinegar as this is the central flavor in our recipe.
- Mustard – Dijon mustard, either smooth or whole grain. I used smooth in the pictured recipe, but we frequently use whole grain as well. It gives the dressing a beautiful rustic look.
- Garlic – Minced . Fresh garlic will give the most punch, but you can use jarred if it’s easier. Garlic powder will even work if you’re in a pinch.
- Seasonings – Fresh cracked black pepper, and salt.
- Water – Make sure you’re using a good filtered water for best results.
How do you make red wine vinaigrette? (step-by-step)
⭐ First, add oil vinegar, mustard, garlic, salt, pepper, and water to a bowl, measuring flask, or mason jar (I’m partial to a wide mouthed mason jar).
⭐ Next, cover and whisk, shake vigorously, or use an immersion blender to emulsify.
⭐ Then, use on your salad, as a marinade, or store in the fridge for later.
⭐ Finally, if using later, shake again before adding to your food.
Preparation
Can you make this ahead of time?
Yes! I like to prep a double or triple batch of the dressing and use it over a couple weeks time. This will keep in the refrigerator very well.
A double batch of this dressing will yield about the equivalent of one store-bought bottle.
Why is my red wine vinaigrette yellow and not red?
The pictured dressing has a yellow hue for two reasons, first because it’s seasoned with mustard. Some mustards will lend more colors than others.
Secondly, I like to emulsify my dressings with an upright or stick blender. This gives the oil a creamier texture and a yellow-ish hue. I promise, it’s still red wine vinaigrette and it’s absolutely delicious.
Do I have to blend my dressing?
Nope. Feel free to whisk or shake!
What is red wine vinaigrette made of?
Our dressing is made from red wine vinegar, mustard, garlic, water, salt, and pepper. Simple as can be, but a hit every time.
Storage and leftovers
How long does red wine vinaigrette last?
Salad dressings and marinades typically last for as long as the ingredient with the shortest use by date. So take a look at the expiration dates on each of your ingredients and then go by the soonest one.
How do you store red wine vinegar dressing?
We store ours in a mason jar or carafe in the refrigerator. We usually use ours within a couple weeks, but it will usually last much longer, depending on the expiration dates on your individual ingredients.
Can you freeze red wine vinaigrette salad dressing?
You can! Make a whole bunch and stash it in mason jars, then pop in the freezer. Make sure to leave some headroom for expansion and only use freezer-safe containers.
This vinaigrette will last indefinitely in the freezer. Thaw in the refrigerator or under a warm tap if you need it sooner. Whisk or blend if it has separated.
What to eat with red wine vinaigrette (serving suggestions)
My favorite salad in the world to eat with this dressing is a hearty cobb salad. Oh, my, gosh. So yummy. It’s also fantastic on a spinach and strawberry salad or a steak and cranberry salad!
Alternatively, use this simple dressing as a marinade for your baked chicken, or in lieu of the Italian dressing in our Italian dressing chicken recipe. It’s also great as a steak marinade (try it on grilled flank steak) and on salmon (check out our baked salmon recipe) or pork (grilled pork chops)!
