How to Hard Boil an Egg

I'm kind of on a 'Basics of Cooking' kick. My apologies to the seasoned chefs in the group, but as someone who taught themselves to cook, I think these things are worth talking about. Today's lesson? Hard boiled eggs. Mmmmm. Delicious on their own, but also fantastic integrated into other recipes.

Hard Boiled Egg Ingredients:
  • Eggs
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Ice

Hard Boiled Egg Directions:
  1. Bring a pot of salted water to a rolling boil.
  2. Very carefully add your eggs (I use a slotted spoon to lay them in gently). There should be enough water to cover your eggs.
  3. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook the eggs for approximately fifteen minutes.
  4. Carefully remove the eggs (I use the slotted spoon again) and place them in an ice water bath for about fifteen minutes to cool.
  5. Peel and enjoy!

  4. sarah - the trick is low and slow. don't boil hard or the whites will become rubbery and the yolks will turn grey. blech.

so glad you enjoyed the wings, yay!

  5. I wrote a post on this very thing last year, too! SO many people wonder how to do it well. I actually put in the eggs while the water is still cold, and gradually warm it up as the water boils. I LOVE egg and olive salad!

  6. Funny! My mother was telling me that she was going over to my 20 year olds sisters house yesterday to boil eggs. I think my mom needs to "let go" and just send this link! A day late, but I'm doing it...thanks for helping my sister grow up :p

  7. Perfect eggs, every time. Thanks April. The shells slip off, not looking like peeled with a staple remover. And the yokes are a beautiful color. Thanks April
