Preparation

Can you make French toast casserole ahead of time?

Yes! You can make Overnight French Toast Casserole by preparing the dish completely the evening before, then covering or wrapping it tightly and storing in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake it the next morning.

You can also bake it ahead of time and reheat it in the toaster oven or microwave when ready to eat.

Can you double the recipe?

Yes, if you want to make baked French toast for a large crowd, use a roasting pan and double the ingredients.  Roasting pans are typically about 16″ x 13″.

You may need to increase the cook time about 15 minutes.  Begin checking for doneness at 45 minutes and cook longer as needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my French toast casserole soggy?

The casserole may be soggy if your ratio of egg custard to bread is off.  Make sure that the bread has soaked up the custard and you don’t have a large pool of it on the bottom of your dish.

If there’s too much you can drain off some of the excess, or add extra bread.

What do you serve with French toast casserole?

I love to serve this with pure maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit.  It’s delicious with a spoonful of tropical fruit salad or a dollop of homemade cream cheese icing. And don’t forget some crispy oven bacon on the side!

Recommended tools

  • Stick blender – Possibly the most used gadget in my entire kitchen.  The key to making a hand blender useful versus a giant pain in the butt is to rinse it immediately after using.  That way you’re never trying to get crusty dried goop out from under the blades.
  • Electric mixer – I love love love love love (x’s 100) my stand mixer.  Really and truly.  But my daily work horse is this handheld electric mixer.  It even comes in allll the colors.  Which, yay!
