Preparation
Can you make peanut butter mousse ahead of time?
You can prepare this recipe a day in advance. Store in the refrigerator in a covered bowl, tupperware, or sealed piping bag until you’re ready to use or serve.
Can I substitute the cream for milk?
Do not substitute the cream for milk in this peanut butter mousse recipe . If you use milk instead, you will end up with a runny mess. Which is delicious, but not the goal here.
Do I need an electric mixer to prepare this?
You will need an electric mixer or immersion blender to whip enough air into the cream in time for it to set properly with the pudding mix and achieve the right consistency.
Storage and leftovers
How long does chocolate mousse last?
Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Any longer than that and they texture will be less appetizing.
Can you freeze chocolate mousse?
We do not suggest freezing this recipe. It is best eaten soon after preparation.
Frequently asked questions
What is peanut butter mousse
It’s a sweet peanut butter flavored dessert, similar to a pudding but lighter as it has been whipped to incorporate air. It is delicious eaten on its own, or try it as a filling or topping in other recipes.
The flavor is reminiscent of peanut butter balls or the inside of a reese’s peanut butter cup.
What do you do with 3 ingredient peanut butter mousse?
You can do the obvious with your mousse and eat it with a spoon, but we also love to use this quick mousse as a filling between cake layers.
It holds up beautifully and gives a decadence to the cake that you won’t get with regular icing. Try it in our chocolate overload cake!
How do you eat peanut butter mousse?
I like to pipe the mousse into small bowls. This recipe could also be used as a cupcake topping or cake filling! Our favorite piping tip (and the one we used for the mousse pictured here) is the 1m star tip.
You can also use a large ziploc bag and snip off the tip if you don’t have an icing piping bag. (Or just spoon it into bowls!).
Tips and tricks
✅ Fold in your favorite add-ins like crushed oreos, mini chocolate chips, chopped peanuts, or smashed pretzels.
✅ Double the batch and use it to frost your Texas sheet cake.
✅ Chill before piping for a stiffer mousse or pipe immediately for a softer finish.
What to enjoy with peanut butter mousse (serving suggestions)
Use it as a topping or filling for our classic chocolate cake, on some chocolate mug cake, or on these mocha cupcakes.
You can also dig in as-is (my favorite way!) after a yummy meal of slow cooker pork and sauerkraut or our tuna casserole recipe!
