Preparation and storage
How do you make a chunky blue cheese dressing?
Our homemade blue cheese dressing is made with crumbled blue cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and spices. As with any recipe, the end result is going to depend on what you put in it.
So go with a great quality blue cheese, and full fat mayonnaise and sour cream. You can make it with the fat free or low fat stuff, but you’ll get the best thick and creamy blue cheese dressing if you use really great whole fat ingredients.
How long can you keep homemade blue cheese dressing?
You can keep the dressing for as long as the individual ingredients are good. More specifically, take a look at the expiration dates of each of your ingredients, and find the one with the earliest date.
That’s the expiration date you’ll want write on the bottom of your jar. Make sure to use something that won’t wipe off, like a sharpie, or a sticker.
Frequently asked questions
Is blue cheese always pasteurized?
Blue cheese is not always pasteurized. Pasteurization is a heating process that kills microbes, mainly bacteria, in food and drink. If you want to use pasteurized cheese, definitely make sure to read the blue cheese labels closely.
Can I eat blue cheese salad dressing while pregnant?
According to Baby Center, soft, blue-veined cheeses, such as danish blue and roquefort, are not considered safe to eat in pregnancy. Hard, blue-veined cheeses, such as stilton, are less likely to contain listeria than soft, mould-ripened cheeses. In fact, the NHS says that stilton is safe to eat when you’re pregnant. ref
Whether to blue cheese dressing while pregnant is going to be a personal call. I ate it sparingly, and often heated it first (and then poured it over a good seared steak, yum), but not everyone is comfortable with the risk involved.

Oh my goodness blue cheese dressing is the BEST, and your version sounds just heavenly! I was so good with my first pregnancy and never ate any of the soft cheese, by the third after countless reassurances from my BIL (who is in the baby profession) I was totally a ‘give me ALL the cheese kinda girl’ 🙂
April says
i was definitely a little more liberal with each pregnancy LOL
Mark says

Kim Hunt says
what’s the nutritional information for this recipe? More particularly, the carb count.
April says
Hi Kim! That’s going to depend on what ingredients you use (i.e. full fat, low fat, etc). Here’s a calculator you can plug your ingredients into and find out 🙂 http://www.myfitnesspal.com/recipe/calculator

Robin says
Amazing!!! I doubled the ingredients for a bigger supply. I’m licking the spoon 🙂
Gera says
Does this get runny the longer it sets? Seemed creamy when I made it and now a few days later is runny.
April says
No it should not get runny, if anything it should be thicker. You are keeping it in the refrigerator, correct? Also make sure to check your use by dates.
Kim says
It was almost too thick after sitting in the refrigerator. Is there a way to thin it?
April says
you can add a little bit of milk to it if you wish, but usually if i whisk it for a moment with a fork it gets back to the right consistency 🙂
Brooke says
I love bleu cheese dressing and this is so tasty! I added just a bit of milk to make it creamier. Spot on flavor!

Cary says
I just made this and it’s chilling but at first taste, it’s very good! Look forward to using it on salad and as a dip. Could you please clarify what the 74K calories means? I’m used to just being given “straight” number of calories per serving. Two tablespoons can’t be JUST 74 calories??!! Not with mayo, sour cream and cheese…I wish! 🙂
Thanks,
Cary
April Woods says
Hi Cary – The exact calories will obviously depend on your specific ingredients (i.e. what blue cheese, mayo, sour cream you use), but the recipe is about 74 calories/serving with the serving size being 1 tablespoon. Hope that helps 🙂 xo April
Cary says
Ok April thanks. I appreciate the info!
