Our easy Chocolate Pastry made with puff pastry, dark chocolate, and cream cheese is just what you need to transport you away to France for a few blissful minutes!

This Chocolate Pastry recipe is my homage to France. About a billion and four years ago (okay, like twenty), I visited Paris with my family.  One of the things I remember was how chocolate, and cheese, and pastries were every where. Making this for a brunch? Make sure you do a breakfast casserole and some banana muffins too!

Chocolate Pastry Ingredients

  • Puff pastry sheet – you can find this in the freezer section at your local grocery store.
  • Cream cheese icing – Grab a can from the market or use our super simple (and super delicious)  easy recipe for cream cheese icing.
  • Semi sweet mini chocolate chips – milk chocolate or dark chocolate would also work in this recipe.
  • Egg white – For making the outside of the pastry beautifully golden and crisp.

Make even slices on either side of the pastry. A pizza cutter works great!

How Do You Make a Chocolate Pastry

First, thaw pastry dough according to package, then roll puff pastry into a rectangle.

Next, cut strips on either side, then spread cream cheese frosting down the middle.

Then, sprinkle with chocolate chips, and the braid puff pastry over filling.

Next, in a small bowl, whisk egg white and water together.  Brush over pastry braid.

Finally, bake until golden brown and after it’s done, melt remaining chocolate chips, drizzle over pastry and enjoy!

Chocolate Pastry Inspiration

This really simple and super delicious Chocolate Pastry is inspired by that long ago brief visit to France, as well as my desire as a mom now to have a little me moment during the day with my pastry and some hot coffee.

Alternate folding strips over top, then tuck in the ends.

Chocolate Pastry Variations

Want to make it even fancier?  Sprinkle some course ground sugar over the top.  I didn’t do that, but if you’re making this for a crowd and want to be super impressive – go for it!

One of my favorite ways to have a little me time, is to grab a snack and sneak out to the hammock in our backyard when my husband gets home.  It’s a bit out of the way, so the kids don’t think to look for me there.

Sometimes I can even snooze for a few minutes after enjoying the blissfulness of eating alone.  (Can I get a high five for eating alone?)

Time Out For Yourself

If I’ve learned anything as a mom (wife, employee, person who lives on planet earth), it’s that sometimes you need to step away and have a moment just for yourself.

It’s okay to hide your favorite food in the back of the refrigerator so you can enjoy it after the kids go to bed.  It’s okay to take an extra ten minutes in the bubble bath and just breath (or binge watch Netflix), and it’s okay to want a flaky, cheesy, chocolatey pastry all to yourself.

And… if you’re feeling real crazy… moarrrrr chocolattttte

Using Puff Pastry for a Chocolate Braid

Frozen puff pastry works perfectly in this recipe as an easy dough solution.  Roll it out thin (don’t skip this step!) and pile the ingredients on.  Make it for you (yasssss), or invite your girlfriends over to enjoy a little adult conversation.

I never realize how badly I miss adult conversation until I finally get some.  Then I’m all moarrrrr.  Give me all the moms!!!

The extra chocolate drizzled on top might be overkill.  But I’m going to argue that it’s gorgeous and you shouldn’t skip it.

Also, chocolate.  Mmmmmm.

  • Bakers half sheet – It’s cool, we only have about six of these bakers half sheets because they’re good for absolutely everything.  Cookies? Yes! Steak? Yes! Cake? Oh yeh! Roasted veggies? Uhhhh huh!
  • Silicone baking mats – Nothing sticks to these!  Whaaaa?!  Perfect for baking sugary cookies, or cheesy croissants or make some no bake cookies.  You know why? Because nothing sticks to these!!!

Oh I need a big piece of this in my life. Looks so good.

  7. I am going to try and make this desert for a party next week but my only comment is that while in Paris–which I love-most of the deserts are made with Nutrella–not chocolate–so was this your version–even Amsterdam Nutrella was the main ingredient inside any of the chocolate crosssiants–so have you replaced it with chocolate chips?

    1. Hi Norma! I haven’t been to Paris since the 90’s, which was before Nutella was so popular 🙂 Best,
      April

Great recipe! It was so easy to make and turned out absolutely delicious. For a little extra I added coconut inside 😋

  9. christina says:

Can this be made a head? Or does it need to be served hot?

  10. How could I possibly fail with such an amazing and easy pastry!?! The cream cheese ran out of the pastry and ran all over the floor of my oven and under the seals around the bottom of the door! A sticky, sticky mess. Please tell me what I did wrong, as I would really like to try again.

    1. Make sure the icing isn’t spread over the slits and the braid is nice and tight otherwise it may ooze out. If you find you don’t have enough pastry for this, try rolling it a little thinner. You also can cut back a bit on the frosting. Hope that helps!
