Preparation
What does buttermilk do to biscuits?
Buttermilk makes biscuits lighter and fluffier than regular biscuits because the acidity in the buttermilk creates a reaction with the baking powder. This helps the biscuits to rise and creates that light fluffy texture.
What can I substitute for buttermilk?
To create a buttermilk substitute for biscuits, combine 1 cup whole milk (2% will also work) with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice.
Stir, then allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes (it will curdle a bit). Use the mixture as a 1:1 ratio for buttermilk.
Can cheddar jalapeno biscuits be made ahead of time?
These biscuits are best enjoyed immediately after baking. However, you could make them a day or two ahead of time and store them in an airtight container at room temperature until ready to serve.
What kind of cheese to use for cheddar jalapeno biscuits?
We used shredded cheddar cheese but you could use whatever you have on hand. Colby jack. sharp cheddar or even pepper jack would work great for these biscuits.
How spicy are cheddar jalapeno biscuits?
That depends on how spicy the jalapenos are. You can buy mild or tamed diced jalapenos to keep the heat at a minimum.
Storage and leftovers
How long do cheddar jalapeno biscuits last?
Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Can cheddar jalapeno biscuits be frozen?
Yes, these freeze well! Let the biscuits cool completely and store them in an airtight freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and rewarm in the oven.
Tips and tricks
✅ You can also use fresh diced jalapenos for this recipe, just make sure to remove the seeds and membranes so the heat isn’t too overwhelming. You can also use green chiles instead of jalapenos for less heat.
✅ If you like a more browned top, brush the biscuits with the remaining buttermilk, melted butter, or heavy whipping cream before baking. You can do this a second time 3 – 5 minutes before the bake time ends.
✅ Don’t want any spice in your biscuit? Simply leave out the jalapenos and this recipe will make a delicious cheesy biscuit to pair with any meal!
