  • Rice – Long grain white rice.

  • Butter – Unsalted.
  • Salt – Kosher or sea salt.

How do you cook rice in the oven? (step-by-step directions)

First, rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Place the rice in a baking dish.

Next, melt the butter and dissolve the salt in the boiling water. Pour over the rice and cover tightly with foil.

Then, carefully transfer the baking dish to the oven and bake until all of the water has been absorbed.

Finally, remove from the oven and let the rice rest. Then fluff with a fork and serve.

Rinsing your rice before cooking isn’t strictly required, but we find it makes for a better result!

Can baked rice be made ahead of time?

Yes, prepare the rice and then let cool completely. Store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to serve. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a little water.

What kind of rice to use for baked rice?

We used long grain white rice. We don’t recommend using instant rice for this recipe as it will become mushy and overcooked. You could also use basmati or jasmine rice. Brown rice will take about twice as long to cook so keep that in mind.

Why do I need to rinse the rice first?

Rinsing the rice removes any extra starch or debris from the rice. This helps the baked rice to remain light and fluffy instead of heavy, gummy and sticky when prepared.

How long does baked rice last?

Cool leftovers completely and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

Tips and tricks

✅ If you are changing the type of rice, make sure to consider shorter or longer bake times.

✅ Swap boiling water for chicken broth, beef broth or vegetable broth for added flavor.

✅ To cool the rice quickly for storage, spread out on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the fridge for even faster cooling.

✅ When freezing, pack the rice into measuring cups and measure out the desired amounts into freezer safe bags. This is a great method for meal prep!

Ingredients
 

  • 2 cups long grain white rice
  • 4 cups boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Drain water away and place rinsed rice in a 2 quart baking dish.
  • Melt the butter and dissolve the salt in the boiling water, whisk together, and then pour over the rice. Cover very tightly with foil or an oven safe lid.
  • Carefully transfer baking dish to a 375℉ oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until all of the water has been absorbed.
  • Let rest for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
