Fried Pickle Ingredients

  • Egg – Egg will bind the flour and seasoning to the pickles.
  • Milk – The milk is used to create your batter – my preference is whole milk for the richness in flavor.
  • All Purpose Flour, Make sure to divide this as per the recipe; you will use some for the wet mix and some for the dry.
  • Worcestershire sauce – Amps up the umami goodness.
  • All Purpose Seasoning  – I like Lawry’s, Seasoned Salt but choose one that speaks to you!
  • Oil – I use olive oil for frying but you could use any neutral oil.
  • Pickles – Get really big ones, seriously, like deli size, sliced. And if you’re feeling ambitious, use our refrigerator pickle recipe to make your own!
  • Ranch dressing  – For dipping.  Blue cheese dressing is good too!

How Do You Make Fried Pickles

First, whisk egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce and flour.

Next, combine flour and all purpose seasoning and prepare frying pan with oil.

Then, dip pickle slices in the wet ingredient bowl, then the dry ingredient bowl. Dip again in the wet ingredient bowl, then once more in the dry ingredient bowl.

Finally, place prepared slices gently in hot oil until lightly browned. Turn and brown on the other side.  Remove from oil and place pickles on a paper towel covered plate, and enjoy with some ranch dressing dip!

SLICED PICKLES FOR FRIED PICKLES

Preparation

What type of pickles for fried pickles?

Any type of pickles will work fine.  Spears, halves, slices, and chips – as pictured here!  My personal favorites are pickle chips or slices because they are the perfect size for dipping in ranch dressing.  Mmmmm.

I strongly suggest you try our refrigerator pickles recipe for making your fried pickles!

Can you fry pickles in an air fryer?

You can make them in an Air Fryer. fry them for 10 minutes, flipping once halfway through.

Can you bake fried pickles?

You can bake fried pickles (although technically then they’re not fried). However, this will make them a little less guilt inducing! Follow the recipe, then bake on a parchment lined baking sheet at 450F for 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.

HOW TO BATTER PICKLES
Top left: dipping pickle in batter, top right: batter covered pickles, bottom left: seasoned flour on pickle, bottom right: double battered pickle

Can you make fried pickles without eggs?

Yes, you can make them without eggs. Make sure you dry the pickle slices really well so that the batter will stick. The batter may not stick quite as well.

Can you make fried pickles with pancake batter?

Yes, you can prepare them with pancake batter or a pre-made mix, like Bisquick. Interestingly, the first record of a fried pickle recipe (in 1962) used pancake batter!

When prepared with pancake batter they will have a more bread-like texture to them.

Can I make fried pickles with panko?

You can also use Panko bread crumbs to up the crunch. Dip into Panko for the final dry dip (instead of the flour mixture).

FRIED PICKLES IN OLIVE OIL
I like to fry mine in olive oil, but you can use any mild oil.

Leftovers and storage

How do you reheat fried pickles?

To reheat the pickles, warm them in a 350F oven or toaster oven for about 10 minutes. This will re-crisp them for maximum yum.

HOW TO MAKE FRIED PICKLES
We used slice pickles, but you can use halves or spears too!

Nutrition

Are fried pickles gluten free?

Pickles are gluten free (check the label if buying), but fried pickles usually are made with wheat flour. However, you could try this recipe with some tapioca flour or arrowroot flour to make it gluten free!

Just substitute for the wheat flour, and you will get a more tempura like batter.

Are fried pickles vegan?

They can be vegan, although my recipe has eggs and milk. You could use an egg substitute for the egg and milk to get the “stickiness” you need for the wet batter. Dry the pickle slices well before starting the dipping process.

Are fried pickles healthy?

They are not “healthy,” per se, as they are deep fried. However, you will be enjoying them as a snack, not an entree, so your serving size will be limited.

What’s better than a fried pickle? A stack of fried pickles!

Frequently asked questions

What do fried pickles taste like?

Fried pickles are crunchy on the outside and soft and sour and salty on the inside. They taste like a little salty slice of heaven.

OK, the taste can depend on the type of pickle you use. I like a nice, sour dill, but some people fry up bread-and-butter pickles or garlic dills. Experiment to see what you love!

Tools we love

  • Calphalon everyday pan – This is a 12″ two handled pan that you will use pretty much every day.  Which, of course is why it’s called an everyday pan.  I have this one and the Le Creuset version.  I use a whole lot of pots and pans in my line of work (apologies to my husband, the dishwasher!) and these are by far my most frequently used pans.
  • End grain cutting board – This is my absolute favorite cutting board and the one that I get the most compliments on.  And p.s. I have a lot of cutting boards.  It really is absolutely stunning, and knows how to take a beating.  We use it every single day!
  • Santuko knife – My favorite knife for cutting vegetables!  This knife is the perfect size and shape, handles great, and is super reasonably priced.  Also, I just love that it’s fun and colorful!

The whole family loves fried pickles. We prefer dill chips. I am on a keto diet and you can even do them in keto fashion. you just do them in a muffin tin on a 400 degree oven for about 15 minutes. Grated cheddar on the bottom patted dry pickle slice in the middle and grated cheddar on top. Still yummy!
