Italian Pasta Bake (Almost Baked Ziti, But Not Quite)

This Italian Pasta Bake Recipe is one our whole family enjoys and it is super easy to modify for your family's personal taste! It also freezes beautifully.

Italian Pasta Bake Ingredients:

  • 13 oz uncooked pasta (I use whole grain penne, but pick whatever you like)
  • 26 oz spaghetti sauce
  • 14 oz diced canned tomatoes, drained
  • 1/2 lb shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • optional ingredients: spinach, onions, garlic, mushrooms, green pepper, olives, squash, zucchini, meatballs, sausage, pepperoni

Italian Pasta Bake Directions:

  1. Cook pasta until al dente, drain.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine pasta, tomatoes (drained), spaghetti sauce, ricotta cheese and half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Mix well.
  3. Pour mixture into a large casserole dish and sprinkle remaining shredded mozzarella on top.
  4. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 - 30 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and starting to brown. (You can turn your broiler on for a minute at the end to speed things along, but watch closely!!!)
  5. Enjoy!

Yields six (6) adult servings. (The recipe pictured has been doubled)

  1. I LOVE this! I have to leave out the tomatoes though because hubby doesn't like them--and yet he likes tomato based products--I don't get it. Anyhoo, when I put it on my plate, I serve it cheese side down and eat the pasta first and that way I'm left with this ooey gooey pile of cheese. Wonderful, glorious cheese...mmmmm:)

  2. Oh my gosh! I can't have cheese because my little man is sensitive to dairy, but as soon as he outgrows it (or weans), I am SOO making this. It looks so yummy!

  5. thumbs up for all the ingredients but one! the sauce with herbs and garlic inside! try to avoid it as much as you can, we prefer basic tomatoe sauce and we add garlic while making the "soffritto" ( lightly fry garlic in some olive oil)

anyway i really like your blog!
