Patriotic Pretzels Ingredients

How do you make 4th of July dipped pretzels? (step-by-step ingredients)

First, line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.

Next, melt the candy melt you intend to use first (we started with white), and dip each pretzel. Set pretzels aside on baking sheet.

Then, as each layer sets, repeat with additional layers (we did blue second, followed by red). Make sure to add sprinkles where you want them before the candy melts set.  If doing a drizzle layer, you can use a piping bag, a sandwich bag with the end snipped off, or a spoon.

Finally, allow pretzels to fully set before storing in an air tight container until ready to enjoy.

HOW TO MAKE PATRIOTIC PRETZELS
Dip the pretzels in the different colors, allowing them to set in between.

Preparation

Can you make patriotic pretzel candy ahead of time?

Yes! These will keep for several days (or even weeks) if stored properly.

Can I use chocolate instead of candy melts?

For sure! Try these with chocolate chips, chocolate kisses, chocolate flavored candy melts, white chocolate or even other flavors!

Do I have to use a piping bag?

Not at all.  If you choose to do a drizzle layer you can use a sandwich bag with the tip cut off or even a spoon!

Can I use the crockpot to melt candy melts?

Absolutely! This might actually be my favorite method since it’s so hands-off and allows you to melt all three colors at once.

Use a crock pot divider (amazon link) or 3 slow cooker friendly dishes in the crock (1 for each color candy melt). Add the candy melts to your individual dishes, cover, and set to low.  It should take about an hour for the candy to melt. Stir  before using.

HOW TO MAKE RED WHITE AND BLUE PRETZELS
Make sure to add sprinkles before the melts set.

Storage and leftovers

How do you store red white and blue pretzels?

These should be stored in an airtight container in a cool dry place.

How long will 4th of July pretzels last?

These should keep several days, and even up to several weeks in a cool dry environment.

Can you freeze patriotic dipped pretzels?

We do not suggest freezing these.

Tips, tricks, and frequently asked questions

Pretzels: Look for pretzels that are sturdy and have a good shape, we like pretzel rods (pictured) but you can also use mini pretzel twists or sticks. Avoid pretzels that are too thin or brittle, as they may break when dipped.

Oil: If your candy melts seem too thick for dipping, add a teaspoon of vegetable oil or coconut oil and stir until it reaches a smoother consistency. This will make it easier to coat the pretzels evenly.

Excess: After dipping, hold the pretzel over the bowl for a few seconds to allow any excess candy to drip off. This will help prevent thick pools from forming at the base of the pretzel.

Toppings: While the candy melt layer is still wet, you can sprinkle your pretzels with various toppings or decorations. Popular choices include sprinkles, crushed nuts, coconut flakes, or drizzling with contrasting colored melts or chocolate.

Non-stick: Place the dipped pretzels on a non-stick surface like parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. This will prevent them from sticking and make it easier to remove them once set.

Ingredients

  • 12 pretzel rods salted
  • ½ cup white candy melts (almond bark or white chocolate can also be substituted)
  • ½ cup blue candy melts
  • ½ cup red candy melts
  • sprinkles

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  • Melt the candy melts you intend to use first (we started with white as the base layer), and dip each pretzel. Set pretzels aside on baking sheet.
  • MELTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Microwave: use a microwave safe bowl and heat candy melts in 20 second increments, stirring between heat cycles.
Stovetop: melt candies over low heat, stirring constantly, remove from heat as soon as candies are melted; double boiler can be used if desired.
Slow Cooker: add chips to oven safe dishes or a crock pot divider and place in slow cooker (mason jars work well for this); cover, set to low for 1 - 2 hours, stir before using. You can melt all three at once using this method.
  • As each layer sets, repeat with additional layers (we did blue second, followed by red). Make sure to add sprinkles where you want them before the candy melts set.  If doing a drizzle layer, you can use a piping bag, a sandwich bag with the end snipped off, or a spoon.
  • Allow pretzels to fully set before storing in an air tight container until ready to enjoy.
