Chicken Alfredo Bake Ingredients
- Pasta – Cooked to al dente. You can use whatever kind you like. In the pictured recipe we used penne, but you could totally use fettuccine, elbows, or any shape you have on hand.
- Butter – I’m partial to salted butter, but unsalted works too.
- Heavy cream – Also sometimes called whipping cream or heavy whipping cream.
- Chicken broth or stock – Here’s how we make homemade chicken stock. You can also use water + bouillon.
- Garlic – Minced. Fresh is best, but jarred can be substituted.
- Cheese – Grated parmesan cheese and shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Chicken – Cooked and chopped. We typically use chicken breasts – see how we make perfect baked chicken.
- Seasonings – Salt, pepper, nutmeg.
Prep the sauce, add the noodles, then chicken and cheese, and bake!
How do you make a chicken alfredo bake? (step-by-step)
⭐ First, heat butter and garlic in a large skillet until butter is melted and garlic is fragrant. Stir in chicken broth and heavy cream. Simmer, whisking constantly, until sauce has started to thicken.
⭐ Next, turn heat to low and whisk in parmesan cheese and the seasonings until the cheese has completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
⭐ Then, combine sauce with the pasta, cooked chicken, and mozzarella. Press pasta mixture into a casserole dish, and sprinkle remaining cheese over the top.

I like to add some fresh parsley on top for color.
Preparation
Can you make a chicken alfredo bake ahead of time?
Yes! You can assemble the full casserole a day or two ahead and bake when ready, or you can prep the sauce up to a couple days ahead to make dinner time easier.
Can I use canned alfredo sauce in chicken alfredo bake?
Absolutely. Homemade sauce is fantastic, but if you don’t have the time (or just don’t want to) you can substitute a jar of alfredo sauce in the casserole.
What vegetables in chicken alfredo bake?
This recipe as written doesn’t call for vegetables, but you can definitely add them to make this a full meal. Here are some of our favorites:
- Broccoli
- Peas
- Sliced bell peppers
- Spinach
- Green beans
- Cauliflower
- Tomato
This dish is so creamy and cheesy!
Storage and Leftovers
How long does chicken alfredo casserole last?
Leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for 3 – 4 days if stored properly. Store in a sealed air tight container for best results.
Can you freeze baked chicken alfredo casserole?
Yes! This is a great recipe for freezing. I love to make two or three casseroles at once and stash the extras in the freezer for later.
Freeze before baking for best results. To cook from frozen, preheat the oven as directed in the recipe, cover the casserole with foil and bake for 60 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 – 30 minutes, or until heated to your liking.
How to reheat leftovers?
Individual servings can be reheated in the microwave on high power in 30 – 60 second increments.
Larger portions can be reheated in the oven on 350F until heated through (15 – 30 minutes). Make sure to use an oven-safe casserole dish.
Holy cheese pull, batman!
Tips, tricks, and frequently asked questions
✅ Use fresh grated cheese – it melts better because it doesn’t contain anti-caking agents.
✅ Make it with shrimp, ham, bacon, or turkey – this is a great way to use leftover roasted turkey or crock pot ham.
✅ Give it a kick with red pepper flakes.
✅ Make two casseroles and freeze one for later – or gift one to a friend.
✅ Add veggies – make it a full meal by baking the vegetables right into the casserole.
Add vegetables to make it a full meal in one dish.
What to eat with chicken alfredo casserole (serving suggestions)
This casserole is delicious with a green vegetable on the side like roasted broccoli, air fryer asparagus, or sautéed vegetables. You could also go with a classic strawberry spinach salad or broccoli slaw. For dessert grab a slice of strawberry pie!
Try making a double batch and freezing one for later.

I was a little skeptical about adding the nutmeg, but it added a nice warm flavor. I think next time I might broil it for a couple minutes, I love the browned cheese on top! 🙂

I write this as I am waiting on it to bake in the oven!
Curious to know what you call ‘grated’. I purchased “grated” Parmesan cheese and it’s a dry crumble like you would shake on top of pasta and sauce. Shredded Parmesan is what looks like a match stick size and would “melt” and more likely what you mean to be used?
Additionally it lists “1 1/2 cups” mozzarella cheese in the ingredients and then says “4. …and 2 cups of mozzarella” then “5. …and sprinkle the remaining cheese…” well, I didn’t catch that in time so all mine went in. No big deal, but can be corrected in the recipe, if you’d like.
After having this for supper I find no need for a half cup of butter, it’s only to cook the garlic, a tablespoon would suffice. It also separated from the contents & pooled in the bottom of the casserole dish.
Additionally, 1T of garlic is a lot – even after brushing my teeth, using mouthwash, crackers & bread, I still have the taste in my mouth! Just a fair warning to others who don’t work from home or plan to go out in public later!
Overall we enjoyed the recipe! Thank you for sharing!
