How to make cake mix donuts that are baked in the oven.

Cake mix donuts are so easy! What, whaaaaa?!  Making donuts at home!  Yay!  My kids are going to flip when they wake up tomorrow and find donuts for breakfast.  These cake mix donuts are so ridiculously easy to make and so funnnnnnn!!!  You can make any flavor you like – just grab the appropriate box of cake mix, and you’re off to the races.I like to beat mine with an electric mixer just a litttttle bit longer than strictly necessary to incorporate more air into the batter – which makes them lighter and rise more (think of a nice domed top on your cupcakes).

What do Cake Mix Donuts Taste Like?

Our donuts are made with cake mix (duh), so they will be cakey and more dense than your typical glazed donut (think of the chocolate glazed donut at Dunkin versus the regular glazed donut at  Krispy Kreme). The springy donuts are made with a yeast based recipe, where as ours is a cake base (sorry to sound like a broken record).Just like with regular cake – you can absolutely freeze batches of these cake mix donuts (undecorated) to whip out for special occasions (or for watching Netflix, whatever).  Just make sure to cool them down completely first and then seal in an air tight container.  Mmmmm, just the thought of a secret donut stash is making me giddy!

  10. What size donut pan do you use? I have a 6 donut pan which makes the full size donut.

    1. I have a six and also I have a mini which I believe makes 12.

  11. I am going to try this recipe. My question – so we do not follow directions that are on the box? Ie: amount of oil , water etc.?

  12. Hina Ahmad says:

How strong do these donuts turn out? Are they very fragile or can the hold up to be stacked or hung on a donut wall? Thanks you!

    1. I’m not sure I’d trust them on a donut wall. (Btw – love that idea!).

      1. I made strawberry cake donuts with cream cheese frosting. I put fresh strawberry’s in the battery &the frosting. They were to die for! And pretty!

I tried another recipe recently and did not like it. These were great, especially with the cream cheese frosting! Thank you for sharing. I will try another mix next time.

  17. Only 8 donuts?! I made 13 full size donuts with this recipe and they puffed up so huge they flowed over the middle and then didn’t want to come out of the pan. The donuts are super fragile too. They taste fine but I won’t be using this as my go to recipe.

  18. virginia robertson says:

I used my silicone donut pans. The first batch took forever to cool down on a wire rack, I removed them too soon and they are extremely fragile and airy light. I am letting the second batch cool for a few hours to see if all the problems I experienced were just due to impatience. Maybe I should bake the day before I want to serve; hope so, I seriously want to be able to make donuts for the family. Thank you for sharing your adventures and cooking talents with us.

  19. Made these with sugar free cake mix, followed recipe exactly, baked at 325 degrees in my toaster oven in a mini donut pan. The first batch came out more like a muffin because I filled it too full. The next we’re better with less batter. Made chocolate donuts & made peanut butter frosting. My goodness, they are yummy. Even my diabetic husband agreed 😋
