Preparation
Can I make peppermint fluff ahead of time?
Yes, this is a great make ahead recipe! In fact this recipe is best after being refrigerated for at least 1 hour. Peppermint fluff can be made a day or two in advance and stored in the fridge until ready to serve.
Can I use homemade whipped cream?
Yes, you can but if you are making it a day or two in advance, it will work best to use stabilized whipped cream/whipped topping.
If you use homemade whipped cream make sure it’s whipped to stiff peaks before stirring in and then serve immediately after preparing.
Can I add cottage cheese?
Yes, I actually love this with cottage cheese. You can sub for part of the whipped topping, or just add it as an extra. (A dollop of sour cream is nice too!).
Leftovers and storage
How long will peppermint fluff last?
You can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Stir leftovers before serving to reincorporate any separation.
Can you freeze peppermint fluff?
We do not recommend freezing this recipe.
Tips and tricks
Is it a side dish or a dessert?
In the south and midwest, this is typically served as a side dish (I guess that’s why it’s called a fluff salad!), but I’ve found in the northeast and on the west coast it’s often served as a dessert.
Nuts or no nuts?
Chopped nuts are a great addition to this kind of dish. They add a nice variety of texture. Make sure to sprinkle some on top as garnish so folks know there are nuts in it!
Frequently asked questions
What can I use instead of food coloring for a natural coloring option?
To achieve a natural red or pink coloring, you can use ingredients like beet juice or pomegranate juice. Start with a small amount and gradually add more until you achieve the desired color. Keep in mind that natural colors may have a subtle flavor impact.
Can I make a larger batch of peppermint fluff for a big gathering?
Absolutely! Simply double or triple the ingredients to make a larger batch. Make sure you have a spacious mixing bowl to accommodate the increased volume of ingredients. Adjust the sweetness and flavor to taste as you scale up the recipe.
Are there any garnish options besides crushed peppermint candies?
Certainly! You can garnish your peppermint fluff with chocolate shavings, white chocolate chips, or even a drizzle of melted chocolate for an extra touch of indulgence. Chopped fresh mint leaves or a sprinkle of cocoa powder can also be visually appealing.
Can I adjust the level of peppermint flavor to suit my preference?
Yes, you can adjust the peppermint flavor by adding more or less peppermint extract. Start with the recommended amount and taste the mixture before adding additional extract. This way, you can achieve the level of peppermint flavor that you prefer.
