How do you make sugar cookie peppermint sticks? (Step-by-step)

First, roll cookie dough into a rectangle and using a knife or a pizza cutter, slice the cookie dough into thin strips.

Then, bake according to recipe directions.  You’re going to want to bake on the longer side of done so they won’t be limp!

Next, allow cookies to cool completely. Melt chocolate chips and dip cookies in melted chocolate. Sprinkle with candy cane.

Finally, allow chocolate to set and enjoy!

Preparation

Can you make the cookies ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the dough up to a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator, or you can bake the cookies a day or two ahead and decorate them when you are ready.

Do I have to make them in a stick shape?

Absolutely not!  We like this shape because it’s perfect for dunking in coffee or hot chocolate, but as you can see from these dipped holiday cookies, they’re good in any shape!

What can I use instead of sugar cookie dough?

Shortbread cookie dough is a fantastic alternative to sugar cookie dough in this recipe. It is only three ingredients and holds its shape nicely while baking.

How do I make sure the dough holds its shape?

The best way to make sure your cookies don’t spread while baking is to chill them first. Cut the cookies to the desired shape and set them on your baking sheet. Place the whole sheet in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before baking.

We didn’t worry too much about keeping ours in shape, but if you like clean lines, this is the best method!

Storage and leftovers

How long do they last?

These will keep at room temperature in a sealed container for 4 – 5 days or refrigerated up to a week.

Can you freeze the cookies?

We find the cookies freeze best before being decorated, but if you have leftovers that are decorated you can freeze them.

Separate with layers of parchment paper and defrost slowly in the refrigerator before moving to room temperature to prevent condensation on the chocolate.

What to eat with chocolate peppermint dipped cookie sticks? (Serving suggestions)

This is for sure a holiday recipe so add it to your gifting cookie tin, or serve it along with a homemade pecan pie after a delicious meal of prime rib, baked potatoes, and roasted brussels sprouts!

Ingredients

  • 1 batch sugar cookie dough
  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3-4 candy canes (or equal amount of starlight mints) smashed
  • flour for rolling out dough

Instructions

  • Roll cookie dough into a rectangle on a floured surface. Using a knife or a pizza cutter, slice the cookie dough into thin strips and place on a prepared/lined baking sheet.
  • Bake according to recipe directions.  You're going to want to bake on the longer side of done so they won't be limp!
  • Allow to cool on a wire rack, and melt your chocolate on the stovetop or in the microwave.  I did mine in the microwave in 20 second increments (stirring in-between), until it was fully melted.
  • Dip cookies in chocolate and then sprinkle smashed candy canes all over the melty chocolate.
  • Cool in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes to allow the chocolate to set.

Sugar Cookie Peppermint Sticks

Whipping up some Sugar Cookie Peppermint Sticks was only one of many things on our to-do list today! This holiday season has barely begun but is already packed full of activities.  We made cookies!  Went hiking!  Got together with friends!  Ate Pepperoni Pizza Ziti!

Sugar Cookie Peppermint Sticks

We were able to pop the ziti straight from the freezer into the oven and put together our holiday cookies while it baked.  The ziti was chowed down on while the cookies baked, and when everyone was done we headed off into the woods for a group hike with friends.  The holidays are busy, but I love that they can still taste good without slaving all day over the stove!
