How do you make chocolate covered strawberries? (step-by-step directions)

First, clean and dry the strawberries, leaving the leaves on for looks and for ease of dipping. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Next, melt the chocolate until smooth.

Then, dip the strawberries into the melted chocolate, rotating as needed to coat the entire strawberry except the leaves. Place on the parchment paper to allow the chocolate to set.

Last, drizzle any remaining melted chocolate over some of the strawberries for decoration.  If desired, brush strawberries with gold dust.

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES
Dip as much as the strawberry as you can without getting chocolate on the leaves.

Preparation

Can chocolate covered strawberries be made ahead of time?

Yes, these can be made a day in advance. Store in a single layer covered lightly with plastic wrap at room temperature for up to 24 hours.

What kind of chocolate should be used?

It’s best to use a chocolate that melts really smooth and creamy. Chocolate almond bark works great and so do chocolate candy melts. Chocolate chips can also be used, they just don’t melt quite as smoothly.

Flavor wise you can use whatever chocolate you like. I’m partial to dark chocolate, but milk chocolate and white chocolate are also delicious!

If you want to dip them completely, then remove the green tops first.

Storage and leftovers

What is the best way to store chocolate covered strawberries?

Within the first 24 hours, you can store chocolate covered strawberries at room temperature. It’s best not to keep them in an airtight container but instead cover them lightly with plastic wrap or tin foil.

After 24 hours, store them in the refrigerator, again lightly covered with plastic wrap or tin foil to allow air flow. The fridge will cause some condensation to build up on them so it’s really best to enjoy these within the first day!

Can chocolate covered strawberries be frozen?

Surprisingly, yes! They are best when made and served fresh, but if you have lots of strawberries and want to make them for future snacks, this is a great idea.

You can freeze chocolate covered strawberries for up to 3 months. We recommend laying the coated strawberries out on a parchment lined baking sheet, leaving space between each strawberry so they don’t freeze together.

Once frozen, you can transfer them to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator and enjoy!

Tips, tricks, and frequently asked questions

✅ Make sure the strawberries are completely dry before dipping in the chocolate or the chocolate will not stick.

✅ Use white chocolate to dip the strawberries and drizzle with brown chocolate or vice versa to change up the look.

✅ Be sure to let the chocolate set completely before brushing on the gold powder.

✅ Add ¼ tsp of lemon juice or vodka to the gold powder and paint the strawberries. This will give them more of a watercolor look!

What to enjoy with chocolate covered strawberries (serving suggestions)

Ingredients

  • 1 pint ripe strawberries (about 12 large, 24 medium, or 36 small strawberries)
  • 8 ounces chocolate almond bark or candy melts also work
  • edible gold dust/powder, sprinkles optional

Instructions

  • Wash strawberries and dry thoroughly. If the leaves are in good shape, leave them on for looks and for ease of dipping.
  • Add your chocolate to a microwave safe bowl and heat on high power in 20 second increments, stirring between heat cycles, until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
  • Hold by the leaves (or use a toothpick), and carefully dip each strawberry in chocolate. Place dipped strawberries on a parchment lined baking sheet or platter. If using sprinkles, add right away before chocolate sets.
  • Use any remaining melted chocolate as a decorative drizzle on some of the strawberries and, if desired, once the chocolate is fully set, brush with gold dust powder.

ALMOND BARK/CANDY MELTS/CHOCOLATE MELTING OPTIONS:

Microwave: use a microwave safe bowl and heat chocolate in 20 second increments, stirring between heat cycles until smooth.

Stovetop: melt chocolate over low heat, stirring constantly, remove from heat as soon as chocolate is melted; double boiler can be used if desired.

Slow Cooker: add chocolate to oven safe dishes or a crock pot divider and place in slow cooker (mason jars work well for this); cover, set to low for 1 - 2 hours, stir before using. You can melt multiple types of chocolate at once using this method.
