How do you make Twix candy bars at home? (step-by-step directions)
⭐ First, preheat the oven and line a baking pan with parchment paper. In a medium bowl combine the flour and sugar and cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly and combined. Press the mixture down into the pan and bake. Let cool.
⭐ Next, melt the butter in a medium saucepan and add in the brown sugar, corn syrup and sweetened condensed milk. Stir and bring to a boil, remove from heat and continue stirring until the mixture thickens.
⭐ Then, pour over the cooled shortbread and let set until the caramel is cooled and firm. Once firm, cut the bars into 2 inch strips and line a flat tray with parchment paper. Melt the chocolate almond bark and oil in the microwave, stirring frequently until melted and smooth.
⭐ Finally, remove each Twix bar and use two forks to cover each bar with chocolate. Make sure to drizzle over the top, sides and dip the bottom to completely coat each bar. Place the tray in the fridge to allow chocolate to set. Once set, remove and enjoy!

Preparation
Can homemade Twix bars be made ahead of time?
Yes, these are great make ahead treats! Make them a day or two in advance and store either at room temperature or in the fridge in an airtight container until ready to serve.
What kind of chocolate to use for homemade Twix bars?
It’s best to use a chocolate that will melt smoothly and set well. We used a chocolate almond bark but you could also use candy melts or chocolate chips.
Can I use dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate for homemade Twix bars?
Absolutely! If you prefer a richer and slightly less sweet flavor, you can substitute dark chocolate for milk chocolate in this recipe.
Can I make larger Twix bars?
Yes! Cut these into the size candy bar you prefer. We did the mini Twix size but you could cut these into squares, longer strips to match a full size Twix, or anything in between!
Storage and leftovers
How long do homemade Twix bars last?
Store these in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days (if they last that long!). You can also store these in the fridge, it’s completely up to your preference.
Can I freeze homemade Twix bars?
Absolutely! These are great for freezing. Make sure the chocolate is set completely and store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge and enjoy!

How to Make Homemade Twix Bars
Homemade Twix Bars
Ingredients
Shortbread Layer
- ¼ cup white granulated sugar
- 1¼ cup all purpose flour
- ⅔ cup salted butter softened
Caramel Layer
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ½ cup salted butter
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tablespoons corn syrup
Chocolate Layer
- 24 ounces chocolate (we used chocolate almond bark)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions
Shortbread Layer
- In a large bowl whisk together the flour and sugar. Add softened butter and beat until mixture is crumbly.
- Press shortbread mixture into a parchment or silpat lined 9"x9" pan. Bake on the center rack of a preheated 350℉ oven for 20 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.
Caramel Layer
- While the shortbread is cooling, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the brown sugar, corn syrup, and sweetened condensed milk. Bring to a gently boil for 3 - 4 minutes. then remove from heat and stir continuously for about two minutes, or until thickened.
- Pour the caramel mixture over your cooled shortbread and let it set for about 10 minutes in the refrigerator. When it has firmed up, carefully slice into bars. (We cut into mini Twix bar sizes)
Chocolate Layer
- While the caramel layer is setting, melt your chocolate and oil together. You can do this on the stove top over low heat (stirring constantly), or in a microwave safe bowl on high power in 20 second increments (stirring between heat cycles.
- Carefully dip each shortbread caramel bar into the chocolate and then place on a parchment lined tray to set. Allow chocolate to set in a cool area of your kitchen, or in the refrigerator, for about 15- 20 minutes.
