Preparation
What is the best bread for air fryer French toast
A hearty bread sliced thick makes the perfect base. I like to use a brioche if I’m buying it at the market or this French Bread recipe if I’m making bread at home.
Folks often ask, can you make French toast with regular bread, and the answer would be yes, you can make French toast with regular bread. Just be careful not to soak to long as it may create a soggy result. (Or make this white bread recipe at home and slice it thickly!).
How do you make crispy French toast in the air fryer
You’ll want to make sure you flip it half way through so both side cook evenly. If you like it a little bit crispier, flip again at the end and add 1 – 2 minutes to each side.
Leftovers and storage
Can French toast batter be saved
The batter can be saved or made ahead for up to one day. If you want your morning to go quicker, make the wet mixture in the evening before bed and store it in the refrigerator overnight. Give it a quick whisk before using.
Do not soak the bread ahead of time, or you will end up with a soggy mess. The only time you want to soak the bread for any extended period of time is if you are making a French toast casserole.
Can air fryer French toast be frozen
Yes, it can be frozen after it is cooked. Let the toast cool, then store it in a freezer container (preferably air tight to avoid freezer burn). Use parchment paper between layers. Reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes on each side.
I love to make a big batch and keep it in the freezer for quick and easy breakfasts.
Tips, tricks, and frequently asked question
Why is my air fryer French toast soggy
Soggy French Toast is usually the result of soaking your bread for too long. If you soak the bread to long, then it’s difficult to get the toast cooked all the way through and you will often end up with a soggy middle.
You want to soak your bread just long enough to get it well wetted on both sides, but not saturated. The only time you want to saturate the bread is if you are doing a French Toast Casserole where you will put it in the oven until it is baked all the way through.
French Toast making tips
- Use whole milk, half and half, or heavy cream in the batter (half & half is our preference)
- Don’t over soak the bread.
- Make it with a thick cut, sturdy bread.
Topping Ideas
Classically French Toast is topped with powdered sugar and real maple syrup. At our house, my oldest likes whipped cream on his French Toast, while the little ones like blueberries and strawberries. These fried apples are also absolutely delicious on top!
I am partial to some toasted nuts and whipped butter.
