Avocado toast is trendy for all the right reasons, it’s easy to make, tastes amazing, and is both filling and healthy!
Avocado toast is my favorite weekday breakfast (and sometimes lunch) because it’s so satisfying and super versatile. I love popping an egg on top, or some pickled onions and leftover baked chicken.

Avocado Toast Ingredients
- Bread – My preference is a sturdy bread like sourdough or an Italian loaf, but any kind works, even plain white bread!
- Avocado – Make sure it’s nice and ripe, you want to be able to easily mash it with a fork.
- Lemon juice – Fresh is preferable, but bottled will work in a pinch. Lime is also good.
- Seasonings – Salt and fresh cracked pepper is classic, but you can’t beat a dash of garlic powder or a heaping helping of everything bagel seasoning!
- Toppings – If you’re a purist, stop here. But if you like to pile on the toppings, try a fried egg, fresh tomato slices, onion, lox, or even some leftover chili.
Ripe avocados, sourdough bread, lemon.
How do you make avocado toast? (step-by-step)
⭐ First, toast the bread. I like mine on the toastier side of toasted so it can handle being loaded up.
⭐ Next, while your bread is toasting, mash your avocado and sprinkle with lemon juice. I prefer a gentle mash, but you do you.
⭐ Then, spread mashed avocado over toast and sprinkle with seasonings.
⭐ Finally, top as desired and enjoy.
If I’m making for more than one, I mash the avocado in a bowl.
Preparation, Leftovers, and Storage
Can you make avocado toast ahead of time?
This dish really is best when enjoyed right after making. That said, there are a few things you can do to cut down on prep time like mashing the avocado ahead of time (make sure to use lots of lemon or lime juice so it doesn’t brown), or keeping a container of sliced tomatoes in the refrigerator.
The nice thing is this only takes about 10 minutes from start to finish, so there’s no real need to prep it ahead.
Do you have to smash the avocado for avocado toast?
No, not at all. This is just my preference as I find it’s easier to get a clean bite of the toast (no avo-slippage) if it’s mashed versus sliced. But you do what makes you happy!
How long do leftovers last?
What leftovers?? Seriously though, I don’t suggest saving leftover avocado toast. It will get soggy and gross. Do save any leftover smashed avocado (cover well and store in the refrigerator), and any toppings that are leftover and which can be used later.
Don’t skip the salt and pepper!
Avocado toast toppings
🍳 Eggs – Fried is my favorite, but poached eggs, scrambled eggs, or even sliced hard boiled eggs are a great choice.
🍅 Raw vegetables – My go-to is tomato and onion. Cucumber is also delicious and adds a delightful crunch.
🥒 Pickled vegetables – Pickled onions, spicy cucumber pickles, garlic dill pickles, and pickled jalapenos are all great choices.
🍆 Cooked vegetables – Sauteed or roasted onion, pepper, eggplant, or even zucchini. This is a great way to use up leftovers.
🥩 Meat – Bacon is a no-brainer, but salmon or lox is fantastic too. I’ve also tried (and loved) thinly sliced steak. Another great way to make a dent in your leftovers.
🧂 Seasonings – Salt and pepper are a must. But definitely mix things up sometimes with garlic, paprika, , and everything bagel seasoning!
🥄 Sauces – Chimichurri sauce, , sriracha, red hot sauce, balsamic glaze, cilantro garlic sauce, blue cheese dressing, ranch dressing.
🧀 Cheese – Fresh grated parmesan, crumbled blue cheese, cream cheese, goat cheese.
🍃 Fresh herbs – Basil is delicious, but we also like cilantro, green onion, or scallions.
My daughter likes her with just salt and pepper, but I love tomato or egg (or just about anything you can pile on!)
Tips, tricks, and frequently asked questions
What kind of avocado for avocado toast?
We always look for a super ripe haas avocado. You want to get a super (almost too far) ripe avocado for the best results. These are creamy (almost buttery) and easy to mash gently with a fork.
How do you mash an avocado for avocado toast?
If I’m making several slices (my daughter loves it!), I’ll mash the avocado in a bowl with a fork. If I’m just making for myself, I’ll typically mash it right in the skin of the avocado to save myself from extra dirty dishes.
How do you make an avocado ripen faster?
Store it in a bag with another piece of fruit (we typically use a banana). This will make it ripen a few days faster.
What’s the most important thing on avocado toast?
Well, avocado and toast notwithstanding, for sure the salt and pepper. Be liberal with it, salt and pepper brings whole thing to life.
Yes, I did add even more cracked black pepper. Yum!
What to eat with avocado toast (serving suggestions)
If you’re going for a full blown breakfast spread, you’ll definitely want some bacon cooked in the oven (no splatters!), chocolate chip pancakes, and crescent roll cinnamon rolls. Maybe even a batch of blueberry muffins for good measure!
If avocado toast is the main event, try pairing it with this healthy coffee smoothie, or a cup of bulletproof coffee.
