Preparation

Can you make breakfast sausage gravy ahead of time?

Yes, absolutely. After cooking, allow the gravy to cool down, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 – 4 days.

What kind of sausage for sausage gravy?

For a traditional taste you’ll want to use what’s called ‘breakfast sausage’ which is a pork sausage popular in the United States that is seasoned with sage and thyme. You can find it near the bacon and other breakfast meats at your local market.

That said, this recipe will work with any type of sausage, so feel free to experiment. I can tell you that hot Italian sausage is also a delicious option.

Tips, tricks, and frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sausage gravy and country gravy?

Sausage gravy is made with sausage, while country gravy (also called white gravy or milk gravy) is made without meat. Otherwise they are very similar.

What can I add to my gravy?

We like this classic and just as it is, but if you want to mix things up, try adding fresh herbs like sage and rosemary, red pepper flakes for spice, a dollop of whole ground mustard, sautéed onions and mushrooms, or some crumbled bacon.

Try adding fresh herbs or red pepper flakes.
