How do you make French onion chicken? (step-by-step)
⭐ First, sauté onions with salt and pepper in a large oven safe skillet. When they are soft and caramelized, add garlic and cook a bit more. Remove from pan and set aside.
⭐ Next, sprinkle Italian seasoning on chicken and in the same skillet, heat remaining oil. Sear chicken to golden brown on both sides. Remove from pan and set aside.
⭐ Then, pour broth into pan and whisk in flour until smooth to create sauce. Return onion mixture and chicken to pan and simmer until broth begins to thicken.
⭐ Finally, place cheese over chicken and bake in oven until chicken is cooked through to a safe temperature. Finish with fresh parsley.
Preparation
What type of onion for French onion chicken?
We like a yellow onion in this recipe, they’re mild and sweet but still flavorful and delicious.
What kind of cheese for French onion chicken?
Provolone and Swiss! If you’re feeling extra, go ahead and toss a sprinkle of Parmesan on top of it all too. Yum!
Can you use chicken thighs instead of breasts?
Yes, I love making this recipe with chicken thighs. My favorite its bone-in with skin (oh, how I love that browned skin!), but you can use boneless/skinless thighs as well.
Storage and leftovers
How long does French onion chicken last?
Leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for 3 – 4 days. Store in an airtight container for best results.
Can you freeze it?
I wouldn’t make this to freeze, but you can freeze the leftovers if you’d like. Allow the chicken to cool to room temperature, then place in a freezer friendly air-tight container for up to a month.
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the microwave in individual portions on high power in 2 minute increments.

How to Make French Onion Chicken
French Onion Chicken
Ingredients
- 4 boneless chicken breasts about 2 pounds
- 3 tablespoons olive oil divided into 2 / 1
- 2 large yellow onions thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- salt & pepper to taste
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons flour all purpose
- 4 slices provolone cheese
- 4 slices swiss cheese
- fresh parsley for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat in a large oven safe skillet. Add the onions and season with salt & pepper. Cook the onions until they are soft, brown and caramelized, about 15 minutes. Add the garlic and cook a minute more. Remove onions from pan and set aside.
- In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper and the Italian seasoning and brown the outside, about 5 to 7 minutes on each side. It's okay if they don't cook through entirely. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
- Pour the broth into the pan and whisk in the flour until smooth. Return the onions and the chicken to the pan and simmer until the broth has started to thicken, about 10 minutes.
- Place two slices of cheese on top of each breast, then place the pan in the preheated oven. Allow to cook until chicken is cooked through and cheese has melted, about 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle with parsley before serving.
Notes
- Whisk together two tablespoons of cornstarch with two tablespoons of cold water to create a slurry. Whisk in slurry in small amounts (instead of flour) until desired consistency is reached.
