There’s nothing more nostalgic than a classic Coke Float! I remember having them as a kid and I love enjoying them with my own children now!
Coke Floats are meant to be enjoyed with friends on warm summer days! Or really, any time that you want to create a wonderful memory and enjoy a tasty treat.
Serve yours alongside some hoisin baked chicken wings, or steak sandwiches with spicy pickles!
Coke Floats
When I was a kid there was a local fast food chain that served Coke floats for a while and occasionally on hot summer afternoons, as a special treat my mom would pile us all in the van and get everyone a float. I loved those days.
So, yesterday was Mother’s Day, and I was thinking about my mom. (Who’s awesome, by the way. HI MOM!). And eyeing the 32 case of Coke we picked up from Sam’s Club. And it occurred to me that I’d never shared a Coke Float with my kids.
I know, worst mom ever. So I immediately called all their little hot sweaty heads in from the trampoline and had them each pick a personalized can for their very own Coke Float. I love sharing things I treasured during childhood with my own kids, and this turned out to be perfect timing.

Yes! It tastes amazing! The combination of sweet carbonated cola with the creamy decadent ice cream, makes a frothy delicious and surprisingly light beverage. Perfect for a cooling summer treat!
What is a Coke Float Called?
A Coke Float is also called an ice cream soda. Or in Mexico it is referred to as a “Helado flotante” (“Floating Ice Cream”) or “flotante”.
How Do You Drink a Float?
I like to start with a straw and then finish with a spoon – but really, you can drink it any way you like! My kids think it’s funny to drink without a straw and end with a frothy mustache.
Which Came First Coke or Root Beer Float?
The Root Beer Float (also super yummy!) is said to have predated the Coke Float. One origin story for the root beer float has it that Frank Wisner, the owner of a Colorado brewery, invented the dessert in 1893 after realizing that the snowy Colorado mountain peaks looked like ice cream floating in soda!

I grew up having pepsi, coke, root beer, orange crush, strawberry crush, grape crush, and dr pepper floats. I was more of a let it melt a little then drink all the liquid, then stir remainder until smooth and finish with a spoon.
