  • Onion – Sweet yellow or white onion, sliced thin. 
  • Soups – Canned condensed ‘cream of’ soup. We prefer cream of mushroom soup in this recipe. Also dry onion soup mix, not prepared. 
  • Butter – Unsalted butter, sliced. 
  • Optional garnish – Parsley or green onion.

First, mix together cream of mushroom and onion soup mix.  Spread some on the bottom of the slow cooker. 

Next, layer as follows: half the onion, cube steak, remaining onions, remaining soup mix, butter. 

Then, cover and cook until meat is tender.

Cube steak (also sometimes called minute steak) is a cut of pre-tenderized beef that typically come from the rump or hind quarter of the cow. 

Due to the mechanical pre-tenderization and similar packaging, cube steak looks a lot like ground beef at the market. 

Can I use pork or chicken?

Absolutely, this recipe would be delicious made with chicken breast, chicken thighs, pork shoulder steaks, or sliced pork loin.  

Do I have to sear the meat first?

It is not necessary to sear the steak before adding it to the slow cooker.

Ingredients
 

  • 4-6 cube steaks
  • 1 small yellow or white sweet onion sliced
  • 2 cans condensed cream of mushroom soup 10.5 ounces each
  • 1 envelope beefy onion dry soup mix
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter sliced
  • optional garnish fresh parsley or green onion, minced

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and dry onion soup mix.
  • Layer ingredients into your slow cooker as follows: ¼ of the soup mixture, ½ the sliced onions, all of the cubed steak, remaining onions, remaining soup mixture, butter slices.
  • Cover and cook on low for 4 - 6 hours, or high for 3- 4 hours, until meat is tender.
  • Garnish as desired.
