Ghost cookies made with Nutter Butters, candy melts, and chocolate chips are both super cute and super yummy. A perfect treat to make with the kids!
Ghost cookies are such a fun activity to make (and eat!) with your kids. Only three simple ingredients and no baking necessary. Heck, have your middle schoolers whip up a batch as a home-ec project! Serve them after a yummy lunch of (blood red) tomato soup.

Ingredients for Nutter Butter Ghosts
- Nutter Butters – I like a classic nutter butter, but really you can use any kind of cookie.
- Candy melts – White vanilla flavored candy melts (or almond bark) for a traditional ghost.
- Chocolate chips – We used mini semisweet.
How do you make ghost cookies with Nutter Butters? (Step-by-step)
⭐ First, melt candy melts according to package directions.
⭐ Then, dip cookies in melted chocolate, being sure to coat both sides and gently shaking off the excess.
⭐ Next, place on parchment paper, and gently press two mini chocolate chips into each one to make the eyes.
⭐ Finally, allow to set.
Preparation
Can you make ghost cookies ahead of time?
You can totally prepare these a few days in advance. Keep them in a cool dry place in a sealed container and they’ll be delicious for several days.
Do I have to use Nutter Butters?
No! I love the shape of these, but you can make cute ghost cookies with any type of cookie – homemade or storebought. I find a firm or crispy cookie works best, so if using homemade cook them just a touch longer than normal.
How do I keep the candy melt from hardening too fast?
The candy melt may seize up while you’re in the middle of dipping. I find that keeping them in a microwave safe container and popping the container in the microwave for a few seconds when it starts to thicken takes care of the problem.
Storage and leftovers
How long do ghost cookies last?
These will last several days and as much as a couple weeks if stored in an airtight container in a cool dry area.
Do I need to refrigerate?
Refrigeration is not necessary for these cookies so long as you have a cool dry place to store them (normal air conditioned room temperature is fine).
Can you freeze Nutter Butter ghosts?
We do not recommend freezing this recipe.
Tips and tricks
🌈 Switch up the colors by using different candy melts.
🥣 Put your melts in a microwave safe dish so you can rewarm it if need be.
🍪 Change up the flavors by using different types of cookies, like chocolate chip cookies, nilla wafers, or classic shortbread!
Serving suggestions
We have a Halloween tradition of making a big pot of chili before going trick-or-treating, it’s a great way to get some good protein in before all the treats. Last year we enjoyed pork chili with baked beans, and I think this year we’ll go for a batch of easy turkey chili. I’d love to hear if you have Halloween dinner traditions.
