Chicken Parmesan Sandwich Ingredients

  • Hoagie rolls – I love to go to the bakery section of our markey and choose fresh rolls for this recipe. A good bread can make all the difference.  If I’m feeling really ambitious, I’ll use my own French bread recipe!
  • Breaded chicken tenders – You’ll need about one and a half to two chicken breasts worth of chicken for this, depending of course how big your hoagie rolls are and how stuffed you want the sandwiches. We used oven fried chicken, but chicken tenders from the market would work fine too.
  • Mozzarella cheese – If you have the time to shred your own cheese, this works best as it will be free of anti-caking agents and will melt better, that said, in a pinch pre-shredded cheese will do fine.
  • Spaghetti sauce – Make sure you’re using spaghetti sauce or marinara and not plain tomato sauce!
  • Fresh basil – Technically this is optional, but not really.  I mean, how can you have a chicken parm sandwich without basil?!

How Do You Make a Chicken Parmesan Sandwich

First, slice rolls lengthwise almost all the way through, like a hot dog bun. If desired, also slice them width-wise completely. Place into an oven safe baking dish.

Next, cut chicken tenders into strips, and stuff into sliced hoagie rolls.

Then, spoon spaghetti sauce over top of hoagies, then top with cheese.

Finally, bake until cheese is melted and bubbly. Top with fresh basil.

What Kind of Chicken for a Chicken Parmesan Sandwich?

You will want a breaded chicken filet for an authentic chicken parm sandwich, like a chicken tender.  We used leftovers from our Parmesan Crusted Chicken dinner, and it worked perfectly.

If you are using leftovers and find the breadcrumbs are a little bit soggy, try popping them in the oven or toaster oven for a few minutes before cutting and adding to the sandwich. This will crisp up the breading again.

Can You Make Chicken Parmesan Sandwiches Ahead of Time?

You can make chicken parm sandwiches a few hours ahead of time, just don’t bake them until right before you are ready to serve.  It is not recommended to prepare them more than a few hours in advance, as you don’t want the bread to get too soggy from the sauce.

To prepare baked chicken parmesan sandwiches ahead of time, assemble everything, and them cover and place in the refrigerator until ready to bake.

  • Santuko knife – My favorite knife for cutting vegetables!  This knife is the perfect size and shape, handles great, and is super reasonably priced.  Also, I just love that it’s fun and colorful!
  • End grain cutting board – This is my absolute favorite cutting board and the one that I get the most compliments on.  And p.s. I have a lot of cutting boards.  It really is absolutely stunning, and knows how to take a beating.  We use it every single day!
