Preparation
Can slow cooker Philly cheesesteak be made ahead of time?
Yes, this can be made a day or two in advance. Store in the fridge in an airtight container until ready to serve. Reheat on the stovetop, oven or microwave.
For best results, store before adding the cheese.
What kind of meat is best for slow cooker Philly cheesesteak?
We use stew meat for this recipe. Stew meat is typically taken from a chuck roast so it contains lots of connective tissue that needs to break down during cooking. The slow cooker is a great way to do this!
Should I use frozen peppers and onions or fresh?
This is entirely up to you! We used the frozen pepper and onion mixture to keep this a simple ‘dump and go’ recipe but you can absolutely slice up fresh peppers and onions in place of the frozen veggies.
Storage and leftovers
How long do slow cooker Philly cheesesteaks last?
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove.
Can you freeze slow cooker cheesesteaks?
Yes, allow the mixture to cool completely and store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge and reheat on the stovetop.
For best results, freeze before adding cheese.
Tips and tricks
✅ Add in some fresh mushrooms if desired!
✅ Slice up jalapenos and throw them in for an extra kick of heat.
✅ If the sauce starts to thicken before the meat is done, add a little water to keep the meat cooking until tender.
✅ Swap the frozen peppers and onions for fresh!
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a different type of cheese instead of provolone?
Yes, you can certainly experiment with different types of cheese according to your preference. Some popular alternatives to provolone include Swiss, mozzarella, or even cheddar for a different flavor profile.
Can I use a different cut of beef instead of stew meat?
Stew meat works well in this recipe due to its tenderness after slow cooking, but you can also use other cuts of beef such as chuck roast or sirloin steak. Just be sure to cut the beef into small, bite-sized pieces to ensure even cooking and tenderness.
How can I adjust the seasoning to make it spicier or milder?
You can easily adjust the seasoning to suit your taste preferences. To make it spicier, consider adding some red pepper flakes, diced jalapenos, or a sprinkle of cayenne pepper. For a milder flavor, simply reduce the amount of au jus mix or omit any additional spicy ingredients.
Can I add additional vegetables to the slow cooker?
Absolutely! Feel free to customize the recipe by adding in your favorite vegetables such as mushrooms, zucchini, or even diced tomatoes for extra flavor and nutrition. Just be mindful of the cooking time required for each vegetable to ensure they are cooked to your desired tenderness.
