Preparation
What if I want to make this nut free?
You can either leave out the nuts completely or substitute 3 cups of another cracker, cereal or pretzel.
Is slow cooker chex mix spicy?
We like to add cajun seasoning to give the mix a tiny hint of spice, we think it’s just the right amount of heat! However, if you don’t want to add cajun seasoning, you can swap it with the same amount of seasoning salt.
Can I make this in the oven instead of the crock pot?
Yep! Instead of heating in the crock pot for two hours, heat your oven to 250 degrees F and place chex mix in a large roasting pan. Cook for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Let cool before serving.
Storage and leftovers
How long does slow cooker chex mix last?
The snack mix is best if enjoyed within three days of preparing. That said, if stored in an airtight container in a cool dry place at room temperature, the chex mix will keep for up to 2 weeks.
How do you refresh stale chex mix?
If the snack mix has started to go stale, you can spread it out on your baking sheet and heat it in the oven for 5 – 10 minutes at 325 degrees.
This will crisp it back up but watch closely to make sure it doesn’t toast it too much.
Can I freeze chex mix?
Chex mix does freeze okay, store in an airtight container and freeze up to 3 months. However, chex mix is best when served fresh. We recommend making a fresh batch when needed over freezing it.
